What is BLUE RECOVERY?
Blue Recovery is dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of fish aggregating devices (FADs) through comprehensive initiatives. We support programs to collect and recycle FAD buoys that have drifted to shore, establishing systems for repurposing these devices and extending their lifecycle to help reduce coastal debris.
This collaborative project implements local programs to recover and recycle FADs in partnership with local fishing fleets and authorities, ensuring these devices remain within safe zones to protect sensitive marine areas.

What to do if you find a buoy
1. PICK UP A BUOY
If you find a Marine Instruments satellite buoy, there is a procedure in place to evaluate potential reuse
2. CONTACT
Send an email to bluerecovery@marineinstruments.es providing information about the s/n, location, condition of the buoy, and proposal for reuse.
3. EVALUATION
Marine Instruments will identify the status of the buoy and evaluate its condition and the proposed use.
4. ACTIONS
Depending on the situation, you can consider recycling, local reuse, or giving the buoy to a local partner.
A. LOCAL REUSE
On the program website, video tutorials are available for the local reuse of recyclable parts of the buoy. Examples of Reuse: flowerpots, lamps, cell phone chargers.
B. LOCAL PROJECTS
Coordination with a local partner to use a working buoy for non-tuna projects. Examples: NOAA Whale Stranding Project, GhostNet tracking & recovery, dFAD recovery program TNC Palmyra Atoll or shark research.
C. RECYCLING
On the program website or by contacting program advisors, you can gain knowledge about the different parts of the buoy for proper recycling. For example, Oceanlab Phoenix

If you find up a Marine Instrument’s satellite buoy, please contact Marine Instruments at bluerecovery@marineinstruments.es and provide the buoy’s serial number, and location. Marine Instruments will inform you of possible appropriate actions.
